A flash flood in the European nation of Georgia has left at least 19 people dead. The surging torrent also overflowed into a city zoo, killing hundreds of animals and releasing others onto the streets. The Bible tells of a worldwide flood that devastated the earth. It is an ominous sign of what is to come.

The Vere River, which runs through the city of Tbilisi, Georgia, a small southeastern country in Europe with 1.5 million inhabitants, is usually just a small stream. But occasionally heavy rains can turn it into a brutal torrent. Last week, after hours of heavy rainfall, a landslide blocked the river creating a catastrophic flood that killed 19 people.
The city’s zoo was also struck by the floodwaters, killing around 300 of the 600 caged animals that could not escape the rising high water. Some of the larger animals escaped from damaged cages and roamed city streets. Police shot several animals before zoo keepers asked for an opportunity to recapture the frightened creatures. One man was killed by a white tiger in a warehouse. A hippopotamus was found wandering down city streets and was eventually cornered, tranquilized, and rescued.
More than 40 people were left homeless by the floods, and one young rescue officer, Zurab Muzashvili, died after rescuing seven people. Six people are still missing, and Scores of trapped victims were airlifted by rescuers.
Jesus once said, “As the days of Noah were, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be” (Matthew 24:37). The book of Genesis describes a great flood that covered the entire earth. It destroyed all the animals and people who were not inside the protective ark built by Noah and guarded by angels during the deluge. Is this how the world will end someday? No, God promised Noah, “Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth” (Genesis 9:11). So what did Christ mean by comparing the days of Noah with the time just before His return?
We catch a glimpse of antediluvians (people before the flood) in a previous verse. “Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Genesis 6:5). There was a complete disregard for the law of God. People only lived for themselves. Jesus explained, “For as in the days before the Flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and did not know until the flood came and took them all away, so also will the coming of the Son of Man be” (Matthew 24:38, 39).
When we turn from the Lord and live only for ourselves, we will also be caught by surprise. The second coming of Christ will be like a flash flood, sweeping away everything in its path. The Bible has warned us to watch and be ready. If we are obsessed only in the affairs of the world, we will be unprepared and swept away, not by a destructive flood, but by a devastating fire.
